Run a Clean Ship
Roaches prefer to dwell in dark, dank places, especially when areas are filled with clutter. Keep your living spaces clean. Cover your garbage cans at all times and store your food in sealed containers and bags.

Baking Soda
Make a mixture consisting of equal parts baking soda and powdered sugar applied to problem areas will control roaches. The sugar will attract the pests, while the baking soda mixes with their stomach acids to cause internal destruction.

Coffee Grounds
Fill a jar halfway with water and coffee grounds. This trap uses the scent of coffee (pleasant to the roach) to lure and trap roaches in the jar. As the pests climb into the jar, they fall inside and drown.

Add the juice of four lemons (with the rinds) and 1⁄2 gallon (two liters) of water to a bucket. Using a sponge or mop, wash your floors with it – cockroaches cannot stand the smell.

Garlic/Onion/Pepper Mix
Add one clove of garlic, one onion, and one tablespoon of cayenne pepper to one quart of water. Allow the ingredients to marinade for one hour. Add one tablespoon of liquid soap to the mixture and spray in the places that roaches frequent about your home.

Caulk Water Pipes
Roaches often congregate in kitchens and bathrooms, using the holes associated with water pipes as a means of travel. Caulking around all water pipes can help eliminate their routes into your living spaces.

Bay Leaves
Create roach-repellant sachets by adding bay leaves to the inside of a pair of pantyhose and placing in dresser drawers, closets, and cupboards.

Borax (not Borat!)
Mix Borax with a little brown sugar and flour and sprinkle behind appliances, under sink, and in corners. Cockroaches carry the mixture back to their nests.

Catnip is a natural repellent to cockroaches. The active ingredient is nepetalactone, which is non-toxic to humans and pets. Small sachets of catnip can be left in areas of cockroach activity. Catnip can also be simmered in a small amount of water to make a “catnip tea” which can be used as a spray to apply around baseboards and behind counters, but ironically should only be used in homes without cats.

Remove the Temptation

The Essentials
Essential oils such as peppermint or lavender have been known to drive mice away. Soak a cotton ball in the oil of peppermint and place it at a suspected entryway. Mashed Potatoes

Keep new mice from entering your residence by adding mint plants to the foundation of your house. If you are already battling a mouse problem, sprinkle mint leaves in the parts of your home that the mice like to frequent. Mint is known to repel mice in most cases, but you must remember to replace old leaves with fresh ones on a regular basis.

Steel Wool
Mice enter your home in the most creative manner, but once you have pinpointed an access point, use steel wool to block their way. The material is much harder for mice to gnaw through than other options, like wood and newspaper.

No need for a PHD when handling your plumbing issues at home – clearing your clogs is not rocket appliances. With just a few dollars (around 20 bucks), a pair of gloves, and this list you can successfully plunge your pad. The first step [of course] is to get over the “icky” stigmata of tackling the clog that has been created. You are not above being self-sufficient…and plumbers butt is sexy when you’ve avoided nasty chemicals and a pricey invoice.

Step 1: The Plunger

One of the easiest and cheapest ways to move a clog is to use a plunger to try to move the obstruction out of the way with pressure. If you have previously used chemicals in the drain to remove the clog, make sure you use rubber gloves and safety glasses to protect yourself (and never do that again!).

Step 2: Baking Soda, Vinegar and Boiling Water

Pour one-half cup of baking soda into your drain. Carefully pour one-half cup of vinegar over the baking soda and cover the drain, if at all possible. At this point, the two will begin bubbling just like a jr. high school volcano experiment. After a few minutes the bubbling should stop.

Pour at least a half-gallon of boiling water over what’s left of the baking soda and vinegar. Then follow that with hot running water to flush it all down the drain.

Repeat Step 2 at least 3-4 times before moving to Step 3.

Step 3: The “Snake”

If after you’ve tried the vinegar and baking soda the clog is still there – you have other options besides chemicals. Like getting a “snake”!

A snake is a 25-50 foot metal wire with a bulb at the end that costs around $5-$10. You push the snake into the bathtub drain, and when it hits the blockage you just keep twisting until the drain runs free. The snake is pretty much the last option before ripping open the drain. And not only is using a snake a sustainable option, it’s also the only option because drain cleaners won’t work at this stage of a clog!

Sink Drain Detox
So sorry but if your kitchen or bathroom sink still can’t pass Step 3…your going to have to play plumber! If your lucky the drain connector is slightly loose enough to twist open, if not you’ll need to grab an adjustable crescent wrench. But before you start cracking that drain open, be sure to place a wastebasket or bucket under the drain, and you’ll want to wear (FSC approved rubber) gloves for this project! Once everything is in place, open up your drain connections and slowly remove the curved piece. Pull all the hair and debris from the drain catch, but mind the alignment with the facet pull. It’s not going to be pretty, but hey you just learned a new talent and it didn’t cost much more than a few bucks and hour of time!

In order to make soy products edible, soy manufacturers have to add large amounts of sugar, MSG and other flavorings and spices. The additives are in addition to the lack of proper processing of soy, which naturally can be harmful to a balanced system.

Almost 90% of the soybean crop in the US is genetically engineered, and hundreds of studies link soy consumption to all sorts of health issues including cancer (especially in women). The phytates in soybeans are extremely resistant to neutralization, and have been linked to malnutrition and growth problems, especially when soya is added to infant formulas.

Soy also contains goitrogens, which depress thyroid functions, and phytic acid, which hinders the body’s ability to absorb proteins, calcium, magnesium, iron and zinc. In general, it is an enzyme inhibitor. Soy (and artificial sweeteners) also weaken the immune system. The immune system is one of the keys to healing illness. Therefore, the more we can support immune related health the better.

The key is to cut out all soy products except fermented soy. Miso, tempeh and soy sauce are made for our consumption.

The good – Soy for humans.


Fermented soybean paste, used in soups and sauces. Rich in probiotics, good bacteria that aid vitamin absorption. Miso is high in sodium but is considered one of the healthiest soy products.

Keep diaper pails and hampers smelling fresher than usual by sprinkling baking soda in the bottom of the containers.

33) Remove Rust:

Cut a potato lengthwise and dip in baking soda as a way to remove rust. Before scrubbing a rusty item, make sure to lightly moisten the surface first. After cleaning, thoroughly rinse the object.

34) To clean wood floors stained by dog urine:

Start off by soaking up the liquid with rags and old towels. Sprinkle a generous amount of baking soda over the wet area. Leave on overnight so that it has a chance to turn back into powder. In the morning, vacuum the baking soda. Follow up by washing in your normal manner to restore the shine of your floors.

35) To add shine to chrome trim on appliances, sprinkle a small amount of baking soda on a damp sponge. Rub across the chrome. Let the appliance dry for one hour, and then wipe down with warm water. Use a clean cloth to dry off the chrome.

Silver -First, line a plastic or glass pan with aluminum foil, as you have done before. Then, lay the silver pieces in the aluminum, as each item should be touching the foil in order to complete the chemical reaction and tarnish transfer.

Then, boil a gallon of water and add one cup of baking soda to it. You might want to use the baking soda and water solution over the sink as it could fizz up in a way that makes a huge mess.

36) Eazy Peazy Shampoo:

Mix 1 Tbsp baking soda with 1 cup water, shake together in bottle and use. Shake the bottle before each use and gently massage into the hair and scalp for a minute or two and rinse.

The lemon’s acidic nature will dissolve gummy buildup, eat away tarnish, and remove dirt from wood surfaces.Lemon juice can also be used to dissolve soap scum and hard water deposits, as well as many other amazing uses.

1) Lemon Juice and Olive Oil:

To create a homemade furniture polish for hardwood items, mix one cup of olive oil with 1⁄2 cup lemon juice.

2) Lemon Juice and Vinegar:

Mix lemon juice and vinegar to create a cleaning solution that effectively removes food stains in the kitchen and makes fixtures sparkle in the bathroom. Lemon juice also adds antibacterial and antiseptic properties to homemade cleaning solutions.

3) Lemons for Copper:

Clean pots and pans with copper bottoms with lemon juice. You can also liven up copper fixtures by cleaning with lemon juice. Simply, cut a lemon in half, dip in salt, and rub away stains.

4) Lemons for Countertops:

Remove stubborn countertop stains by leaving a small amount of lemon juice to work its magic for a couple of minutes (and not any longer because the acidic nature of the juice is strong). Scrub away the stain using baking soda and a clean cloth.

5) Lemon Juice and Salt:

To remove rust from sinks, toilets and tubs, combine lemon juice and salt to create a naturally strong scrubbing agent.

6) Lemons for Drains:

If you place lemon rinds in a garbage disposal, you can remove drain odors. Some people will also pour lemon juice and hot water down a drain for the same effect.

To naturally bleach white clothes and linens, soak items in a bucket filled with diluted lemon juice. Dry the fabrics in the sun and most stains are bleached away.

8) Lemon Scrubber:

Cut a lemon in half and sprinkle baking soda on the cut side. Grip the lemon and use to scrub dishes, surfaces, and stains.

9) Lemon as an Air Freshener:

The scent of citrus fruit is pleasantly refreshing – making lemon juice a welcomed addition to homemade cleaners. You can also add fresh lemons to a glass container or bowl as a deodorizing centerpiece in the living room, guest bedroom, or kitchen.

10) Natural pest repellent:

Create an effective repellent for fleas by cutting a lemon into quarters and submerging it in boiling water. Steep the lemon overnight. In the morning, transfer the liquid to a spray bottle. Spritz your pet with the solution, especially in high-flea zones, such as around the head, behind the ears, and at the base of the tail. If your pet doesn’t react too well to a spray bottle, you can soak a soft cloth in the solution and rub onto targeted areas.

11)Lemons for lovely floors:

Washing your floors with a lemon solution will keep fleas away. Combine the juice of four lemons (including the rinds) with two liters (or 1/2 gallon) of water.

12) Lemons love shine:

Remove mineral deposits and polish chrome objects by rubbing a lemon rind over affected areas. Rinse the chrome well and dry with a soft cloth.

clean-lemon-saltBypass drab and nasty commercial cleaners and get salty! Scrub down sinks, tubs, showers, tile grout, and floors of the bathroom with the abrasive action of salt. Salt also helps remove food stains from pots, pans, and baking dishes.
Simply adding water to salt creates a stellar paste that scrubs down your oven and countertops. And if you don’t believe me, check out this lovely salt [and lemon] post by Green Buffalo Food Company (thanks for the photo!).

Home Salt Scrub

In a16 oz refillable container, mix together:

1⁄2 cup white vinegar

1⁄2 cup salt (1/2 cup each)

Stir with plastic stir stick.  Apply to surface and use our scrub brush and microsuede cloth to scrub and wipe surfaces clean.

Other Salty Tips and Tidbits

  • Soak cast iron pans in water with three tablespoons of salt to remove caked-on food without harming the seasoned finish.
  • Combine baking soda and salt to produce a whitening effect while scrubbing surfaces.
  • Gently use the salt paste to clean painted or paneled walls.
  • Blackened Copper Bottoms: Slice a lemon wedge in quarters, then dip wedges in Kosher salt.  Rub the copper bottom until blackened spots disappear, then keep going until the bottom sparkles.
  • To clean Copper and Brass Add white vinegar to 2 tablespoons of salt until you’ve created a paste. Adding flour will reduce abrasiveness. Apply with a rag and rub clean.
